Still Here, Still Speaking: Supporting the Voices of Active-Duty Families

As military families continue to navigate the unique realities of service life, Secure Families Initiative is hosting Still Here, Still Speaking: Active Duty Military Families Luncheon in Montgomery, Alabama.

This gathering is designed with intention: to create space for connection, conversation, and community among active-duty spouses and families. In the midst of frequent moves, deployments, and the ongoing uncertainty that can come with military life, opportunities to sit together in shared understanding matter.

At this luncheon, Secure Families Initiative will provide space for attendees to share their experiences, voice concerns, and talk openly about the realities of military family life. These conversations are grounded in lived experience and what it looks like to navigate service not just as individuals, but as families carrying the weight of it every day.

Through honest dialogue and fellowship, the goal is to strengthen community ties and ensure military families feel heard, supported, and connected to others who understand the sacrifices and responsibilities that come with service.

We believe these spaces are essential. They remind us that policy and lived experience are deeply connected—and that real change begins with listening.

Following the luncheon, guests are invited to travel together to the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum in Montgomery.

This visit offers an opportunity to engage with the history of the United States through powerful storytelling and reflection. It creates space to explore how the past continues to shape present-day conversations about justice, equality, and community.

For participants, this experience is not just educational it is reflective. It invites deeper conversation about how history informs today’s understanding of service, citizenship, and belonging, and how different communities have experienced those ideas across generations.

Why This Matters

Military families live at the intersection of service and everyday life. Their experiences are shaped by movement, sacrifice, resilience, and adaptation but also by strength, connection, and community.

This gathering is about honoring that complexity. It is about making space for voices that are often balancing multiple realities at once, and ensuring those voices are part of the broader conversation.

Through shared dialogue and reflection, Still Here, Still Speaking centers what often goes unseen: the lived experience of military families navigating service in real time, and the importance of creating spaces where those experiences are heard and valued.
