Help Military Families Make Their Voices Heard in 2026
The Secure Families Initiative (SFI) Voting Ambassador Program is looking for volunteers across the military community to help close the military voting gap before the 2026 midterm elections.
Right now, only 47% of military-connected voters participate in elections—that is 27 percentage points lower than civilians! And – active duty servicemembers have voter protections that do not extend to their families. Military families face unique barriers: frequent moves, absentee ballots, overseas voting deadlines, and confusing rules.
Voting Ambassadors help solve that problem. If you believe military families deserve a say in the decisions that affect our lives, you belong in this program.
What is a Voting Ambassador?
Voting Ambassadors are trusted members of the military community who help others register to vote, request absentee ballots, and understand voting deadlines. They also serve as a local, credible voice in their communities when others face challenges on their way to cast their ballots. You don’t need to be a voting expert. We provide the tools, resources, and support. You bring your network, credibility, and commitment to democracy.
Who Should Apply?
This program is designed for military spouses, active-duty service members, veterans, military family members, and community leaders in military spaces.
If you care about making sure military voices are heard in our democracy, this program is for you. Military families from 30+ duty stations around the world have already joined the SFI Voting Ambassador program.
What’s the Commitment?
Just 2 hours per month. That time might include sharing voting resources with friends or online communities; hosting or helping with a voter registration drive; and answering basic voting questions in your network. Small actions—multiplied across our community—make a big impact.
Where Does This Happen?
Everywhere military families live! On installations, in military towns, in online communities, and in overseas duty stations around the world. Our Voting Ambassadors are part of a global network of military families working together to strengthen democracy.
Why This Matters
Military service members defend democracy every day. But too often, military families face significant barriers to participating in it.
The work of protecting the right to vote has a long history in the United States. After the Civil War during Reconstruction, the Freedmen’s Bureau helped newly freed Black Americans navigate civic life, including supporting access to education and participation in democracy. Many of the earliest advocates for voting access were veterans and members of military communities who had fought for the country and then worked to ensure its promises applied at home.
Today, Voting Ambassadors carry forward that legacy. By helping military-connected voters understand the process, overcome barriers like absentee and overseas voting, and stay engaged in civic life, you are part of a long tradition of service members and families strengthening the foundations of American democracy.
The 2026 midterm elections will shape the direction of our country—and military families deserve to be part of that conversation.
If every Voting Ambassador helps just 10 military voters register or request their ballot, we can reach thousands of military families before the 2026 election.
Join the 2026 Voting Ambassador Team!
If you can give two hours a month, together we can help ensure military families everywhere have the information and support they need to vote.
You already have the network. We’ll give you the tools.
