Born in Tucson, Arizona in 1966, Irene Pena is a proud member of the Yaqui So Cal tribe. Serving on the council for a year and a half, Irene is dedicated to giving back to her community through traditional songs and the sacred drum. Beginning her military service in 1983, Irene enlisted in the United States Army and retired as a Sergeant First Class at the age of 46. Specializing as a cargo specialist and later a unit supply specialist, Irene also served as an Army reserve recruiter in Sacramento for 6 years, bravely filling foxholes during wartime. Recognized for her exceptional service, Irene received the Meritorious Service Award, Army Achievement Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal, among others. Irene retired from the military after 21 years of active and 7 years of reserve duty on February 2012. Not only does Irene continue to support her community, but she also advocates for the inclusion of women in the sacred drum traditions and ceremonies. Irene was chosen as one of five indigenous veterans selected to write and produce 3 songs for a project called Warrior Songs, which is a collection of songs by indigenous veterans. Through her poetry and songs, Irene remains a vital force in preserving her cultural heritage and uplifting those around her.
