To honor and acknowledge Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, throughout May we have explored the intersection between SFI’s policy priorities and the AAPI community.
We explored the intersection of our priorities and AAPI history and heritage on our social media platforms. We featured notable historical figures, discussed policy connections, and shared action items every week focused on voting rights, foreign policy, and domestic de-militarization. Recognizing the value and importance of these topics, we are sharing all of the links and resources here, too. We encourage you to click through, read these posts, and share those that resonate with you. We hope you’ll learn something new by diving into these materials – we sure did!
Intersection of AAPI Heritage + Voting Rights
- Voting Rights Figure: Mabel Ping-Lee Hua
- Voting Rights + SFI Connection: At SFI, we are reminded of how long and slow the fight for voting rights has been, and how important it is that we continue the push toward equitable access for all.
- Voting Rights Call to Action: Vote in your state primary.
Intersection of AAPI Heritage + Foreign Policy
- Foreign Policy Figure: Dr. Bhagat Signh Thind
- Foreign Policy + SFI Connection: From 2019 to 2020, hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) rose 150% (despite a broad decline in hate crimes overall). This spike is not an anomaly, though; anti-Asian racism has long been a component of U.S. foreign policy.
- Foreign Policy Call to Action: Support the “Diversity and Inclusion at the Department of State” Act.
Intersection of AAPI Heritage + Domestic Demilitarization
- Domestic Policy Reform Public Figure: Yuri Kochiyama
- Domestic De-militarization + SFI Connection: Our liberation is bound together.
- Domestic De-militarization Call to Action: Email the White House.
Asian American Pacific Islander Roundtable
SFI is dedicated to ensuring all voices are heard, and we strive to grow our membership to be representative of all military families. As part of this effort, we are hosting a four-part series of Roundtable events this year to highlight different underrepresented families within the military community.
In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are hosting Many Voices One Action: A Conversation with the Asian American Pacific Islander Military Community.
During this roundtable discussion for AAPI military veterans, partners, and family members, participants will connect, share their personal stories, and brainstorm collective action.
We have invited two amazing, highly-informative guest speakers and a moderator who will facilitate a meaningful conversation. We have no doubt the roundtable will inform and inspire! Please RSVP to join this closed-door event.
