Another week full of news (as always). Here are some items we read this week, September 29, 2024-October 5, 2024.

1. A number of headlines from CNN’s live updates on Israel-Hezbollah War:


2. IDF and Hezbollah clash in Lebanon; Israel, U.S. vow consequences for Iran attack (Washington Post, October 2, 2024). Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants engaged in clashes in southern Lebanon, both sides said Wednesday, in what appeared to be their first direct ground confrontations during the war. Israel and the United States promised consequences for Iran after it fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel in what Tehran described as retribution for recent killings of top Hamas and Hezbollah officials.

3. We know the unique fears of having a loved one deployed during a time of conflict. Grateful for the service of our military members and thinking of the concerned loved ones left behind. Two Navy Destroyers Helped Defend Israel Against Iranian Missile Barrage (Military.com, October 1, 2024).

4. Our hearts are still with the families impacted by Hurricane Helene. Here are some ways to pitch in to help with efforts. List: Ways to donate and help flood victims in Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene (Blue Ridge Public Radio, September 28, 2024).

5. National Guard working to rescue hundreds trapped by Hurricane Helene (Task and Purpose, September 28, 2024). Nearly 5,000 National Guard personnel are active in several states with search and rescue efforts after the storm left a path of destruction.

6. Here are all the veterans running for Congress in 2024 (Military Times, September 30, 2024), A total of 181 candidates with military experience won primaries for House and Senate seats this year, according to an analysis from Military Times. That number is down from 196 in 2022, and follows a trend of fewer veterans winning national elected office that began in the late 1970s. This year’s field boasts 71 incumbents, 16 women and 55 individuals who started their military careers after January 2000.

7. Pilot Program to Cover Certain Child Care Costs After Permanent Change of Station Move (U.S. Dept. of Defense, September 30, 2024) This week the Department of Defense kicks off a three-year pilot program meant to reimburse service members up to $1,500 for travel-related expenses incurred for a temporary child care provider following a permanent change of station move.  

Voter Registration Deadlines & Early Voting Start Dates for October 1 – 15

Voter registration deadlines have passed on October 6, 2024 for Alaska, Puerto Rico (online), Rhode Island, South Carolina (online). But there are a number of crucial deadlines fast approaching this month.

These states’ voter registration deadlines are coming up this week!

  • October 7: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana (In person and mail), Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, South Carolina (Mail), Tennessee, and Texas
  • October 8: Illinois (Mail), Nevada (Mail), New Mexico (Mail and online)
  • October 9: Missouri
  • October 11: North Carolina and Oklahoma
  • October 12: Delaware

In many states, you can vote early in person this month. Check your local election office for time and location details.

  • October 7: California, Guam, Montana, and Nebraska
  • October 8: Indiana, New Mexico, Ohio, and Wyoming
  • October 9: Arizona (In person absentee)
