In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, we’ve explored the intersection between SFI’s policy priorities and our commitment to anti-racism and building a multicultural organization. We featured notable historical figures, discussed policy connections, and shared action items every week focused on voting rights, foreign policy, and domestic demilitarization. We are committed to building our advocacy and our work within this context year-round.
Intersection of Hispanic Heritage + Voting Rights
- Voting Rights Figure: Nina Otero-Warren
- Voting Rights + SFI Connection: At SFI, we reflected on the long and slow fight for voting rights and we continue to push for equitable voting access for all.
- Voting Rights Call to Action: Explore and share our Spanish language voting materials.
Intersection of Hispanic Heritage + Foreign Policy
- Foreign Policy Figure: Carmen Contreras-Bozak
- Foreign Policy + SFI Connection: Militarized American foreign policy has contributed to economic hardship in Latin American countries.
- Foreign Policy Call to Action: Join our letter campaign to tell Senator Schumer to repeal the 2002 AUMF.
Intersection of Hispanic Heritage + Domestic Demilitarization
- Domestic Demilitarization Figure: Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales
- Domestic Demilitarization + SFI Connection: Latinos are killed by police at nearly double the rate of white Americans, and the militarization of our police force contributes to this violence.
- Domestic Demilitarization Call to Action: Join the chorus of military spouses calling for reform and encourage politicians to end the 1033 Program this legislative session.

Hispanic Heritage Roundtable
SFI is dedicated to ensuring all voices are heard, and we strive to grow our membership to be representative of all military families. As part of this effort, we are hosting a four-part series of Roundtable events this year to highlight different underrepresented families within the military community.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are hosting Celebrating Hispanic Military Service and Sacrifice: Hispanic Heritage Stories of Courage Past, Present and Future.
During this roundtable discussion for Hispanic military veterans, partners, and family members, participants will connect, share their personal stories, and brainstorm collective action.
We have invited two amazing, highly-informative guest speakers and a moderator who will facilitate a meaningful conversation. We have no doubt the roundtable will inform and inspire! Please RSVP to join this closed-door event.
